Joscelyn Burris

Voice - Beginning Piano

Joscelyn Burris’ love for music started with her love for her family. She grew up listening and singing along to old records and tapes with her grandfather and singing with her very musically inclined cousins. When she was eight years old, one of her cousins gave her his mandolin, which spurred her desire to learn more about music and remains her favorite instrument to this day. At twelve years old, she was given an old keyboard by another cousin which she began trying to teach herself piano with.

When she reached high school, she joined the school choir and met the teacher who would set her on the path to becoming more serious about music and show her that it was possible for her to have a career in the field she loved so much. This was when she decided she wanted to pursue music education so she could bring that kind of community to her own students as it had been brought to her. At the end of her senior year, she was presented with the National School Choral Award for her help in leading the choir and trying to rebuild it after the pandemic.

Currently, Joscelyn is an undergraduate student studying music education at California State University Bakersfield. She continues to explore and play as many different instruments as she can and with as many people as she can. While she never believed she was gifted with the same musical talents as her family, she realized that talent is not something people are gifted, but something they earn through exploration and experiences.
